Wells Fargo Championship betting preview

It’s an exciting fortnight ahead in the world of golf with the game’s very best on view in the Wells Fargo Championship and next week’s USPGA Championship, the second major of 2024.

The Wells Fargo has been given Signature Series status, meaning a mega-purse of $20million is on offer.

Just 69 of the game’s elite will fight for it although that number doesn’t include World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and No.6 Ludvig Aberg.

Masters hero Scheffler is putting family first with a new baby arriving while Aberg is nursing a sore knee.

Quail Hollow Club is the host course once more for this no-cut event. It’s a tree-lined par 71 that also staged the 2017 US PGA Championship won by Justin Thomas.

Wyndham Clark took the title last year but the king of Quail Hollow is undoubtedly Rory McIlroy after three wins over the iconic layout in North Carolina.

McIlroy is the clear favourite to add a fourth title.

🏌️‍♂️ Rory McIlroy can win again

Rory McIlroy will no doubt have plenty of money going on him to win next week’s USPGA Championship at Valhalla. But the smart move could be to back him here at 15/2 rather than the 9/1 next week.

There are two reasons:

First, McIlroy doesn’t have to go up against Scheffler this week and that’s significant given the Texan’s dominance in recent months.
Second, the Northern Irishman has now gone a decade without winning a major. He’s reminded of it all the time and the drought weighs heavily.

By contrast, every time he walks onto the course at Quail Hollow he must feel 10-feet tall after three wins and numerous other top finishes.

Rory, as he showed when winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans pairs event with Shane Lowry a fortnight ago, thrives when mentally free so back him to land this trophy for a fourth time.

🏌️‍♂️ Rickie Fowler for Top 10

While not quite at McIlroy levels, Rickie Fowler also has some seriously strong course history at Quail Hollow.

The Californian took this title back in 2012 and his CV also shows a further four top six finishes at the Charlotte venue along with 14th last year.

Fowler struggled at the start of 2024 but he performed well on the weekend at the US Masters to make the top 30 and backed that up with 18th in the RBC Heritage last time.

With just 68 rivals rather than the usual 155 in opposition, back him at 17/4 with bet365 to make the top 10.

Bet on Rickie Fowler to land in the Top 10 at 17/4 with bet365

🏌️‍♂️ Hideki Matsuyama for Top 5

For a top 5 bet, Hideki Matsuyama has to be value at 6/1 with bet365.

The Japanese star disappointed at Augusta but he was in excellent form before that, winning the Genesis Invitational thanks to a closing 62 and then adding finishes of 12-6-7.

After leading at halfway, he finished tied fifth at Quail Hollow when it staged the 2017 USPGA Championship and he can match that feat here.

Matsuyama is certainly worth a look in the outright market at bet365’s 30/1 (1/4 five places) but with Rory a confident selection to hoist the silverware, the top 5 finish looks the way to go.
