Ex-Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers boss a candidate for Lincoln City

Michael Appleton has emerged as a candidate for Lincoln City.

The Imps are in the hunt for a new manager to replace Danny Cowley, who left them to join Championship side Huddersfield Town.

Appleton has appeared as the 6/1 third favourite on SkyBet behind Newport County’s Michael Flynn and Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth. Lincoln are believed to have had an approach for Exeter City’s Matt Taylor turned down, as reported by The72 earlier today.

Appleton, who played for the likes of Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion in his playing days, is available and eager to get back into management.

He started his coaching career at West Brom and worked his way up from the youth ranks to assistant manager. He had a spell as caretaker boss before getting the manager’s job at Portsmouth in 2011

Appleton spent a year at Fratton Park ahead of switching to Blackpool, where he spent just under two months before he was snapped up by Blackburn Rovers.

His tenure at Ewood Park lasted just 67 days and he had to wait over a year to get back into the dugout after that.

Oxford United came calling in July 2014 and Appleton did a decent job with the U’s. He guided them to promotion to League One in 2015 and to the final of the Football League Trophy twice.

Appleton left the Kassam Stadium in June 2017 to become Leicester City’s assistant manager under Claude Puel. He had a stint as their caretaker manager after the Frenchman was sacked but left last summer.

He recently returned to West Brom to work with James Shan until the end of the last campaign.
