Town Linked With Tyke Thomas
Wednesday, 30th Dec 2020 23:46

Town are reportedly eyeing a possible January move for Barnsley winger Luke Thomas.

According to the EADT, the Blues are considering a loan approach for the 21-year-old, who has made seven starts and 12 sub appearances for the Championship Tykes this season.

Earlier this month, Sunderland and Oxford United were reported to be among a number of League One clubs keen on making a move for the former England U20 international on a permanent basis in January.

Thomas, who is left-footed but can play in either flank, was with West Brom as a schoolboy before moving on to Cheltenham with whom he made one senior sub appearance.

The Soudley-born wideman moved on to Derby County in 2016 and spent time on loan at Gloucester City and Coventry while a Rams player.

Although he made only two sub appearances for Derby, his form while on loan with the Sky Blues during 2018/19 persuaded Barnsley to pay £1.2 million for his services in the summer following that campaign.

In total, 5ft 6in tall Thomas has made 33 starts and 28 sub appearances for Barnsley, scoring twice.

Manager Paul Lambert has said on a number of occasions that he will be looking to add to his squad in the January transfer window, although with money tight.

“I’d like to give them a helping hand,” he said just over a week ago. “If we can bring somebody in, it’ll be beneficial.”

Having turned 21 since the start of 2020, Thomas wouldn’t count towards the 22-man squad of senior players allowed under the salary cap and his wages wouldn’t count towards the £2.5 million limit.

We need a center forward who can score if there is money in the pot.
Hope Edwards is not being sold and we are going to down loan route to save pennies again

Where do you start. ? We struggle to score, bogged down in midfield and we leak goals.

We haven't loaned or bought a player to successfully play a wide role in over 20 years.

What would be the incentive for a young player to come to Portman Road?

Sit on the bench or learn how to play a new role?

Ryan Fraser? Celina? Lawrence? Arguably Garbutt. Not a massive fan of loans, and these were largely McCarthy signings - but I'm not sure you can say we haven't loaned a successful wide player for 20 years.

Barnsley, is that our level now? They are a bigger club than us. Evans has ruined this club. Get out and give our club back you muppet.

Why not? Could have Mo Salah up front but he's not going to score without service.

"Meets Cap criteria" is clearly the defining quality here. Sad times but we do need help if injuries persist, but pinning that on a lad who has just turned 21 says a great deal in itself.....and that Bennetts is probably done for the season.

He seems ok but is he any better than the wingers we have? Dobra & Lankaster can play out wide don't forget. Think a striker should be first on list if Norwood isn't back any time soon

Ryan Fraser? Celina? Lawrence? Garbutt?

None of them allowed to play as a true wide player.

We don't play attacking football.

Why would you need a wide player if your object is to strangle the game and get a penalty, on own goal or a set piece.

Bettyblue, you're like an opposition MP. It's so easy to be critical of everything when you don't have to stand up and be counted yourself. What would you do?

Why do people automatically think we're not scoring goals we need a striker. We definitely don't need another winger. Can't Lambert see we desperately need a midfield ball winner or even two i know we've got Downes to come back but he's proved he's not up to the job either gets injured or booked better suited to a more attacking role.

I hope he's not another contender to be put in a position not suited to him. History speaks for itself. I just want to see some convincing attacking play. Playing Fleetwood should be an opportunity for Lambert to convince us he's the man for the job or not. We are still in contention despite our awful form against the top half of this league. You never know this lad may bring a sparkle back so desperately needed at this moment in time. COYB

SaxonBlue: Spot on with the lack of services being the real issue . We HAVE strikers. we just don't get the ball to them in the danger area.

No wide player in 20 years? That includes Walters, Murphy and Currie, even Edwards! Agreed we spent some time trying to get wide players that were not successful.

Don't need wingers if PL is not playing 4-4-2. Width in a 4-3-3 has to come from energetic full backs . Watch Liverpool Paul to find out how it is done . The wide men are Robertson and Trent Arnold . Not sure our 35 year old full backs will be fit enough to fill that role . KVY can if fit but perhaps PL should be looking there if he is to stick with 4-3-3
